Event Details

For the first of the 2017 Folk Nights we welcome Rosie Hood and Ollie King along with Jack Cookson.

Rosie Hood is a young traditional singer from Wiltshire, and for 2015, a BBC Performing Arts Fellow with the  English Folk Dance and Song Society.  Known for her strong, pure voice and engaging solo performance, Rosie has a keen interest in the history of traditional songs, particularly those of her native Wiltshire, where she has spent time researching in the local archives and developing a broad repertoire of local songs.

She has performed at many of the country’s leading folk festivals and folk clubs, both as a headline booking and supporting a number of established folk artists, including the Cecil Sharp Project and Nic Jones.

Ollie King is no stranger to Ropery Hall as he appeared here in 2013 as part of the Young Folk Showcase.

Since then he has gone from strength to strength, releasing his critically acclaimed debut album Gambit in 2014. The album, released on RootBeat Records, was recorded with Andy Bell and features guest performances from Sam Sweeney, Fay Hield, Rosie Hood, and James Findlay.

Ollie is making a name for himself as one of the most exciting and interesting up-and-coming melodeon players in the country, and has already developed into a mature, well-rounded musician with a unique style and approach to traditional music.

Multi-instrumentalist and singer songwriter Jack Cookson’s distinct style combines his deeply articulate lyrics with memorable melodic hooks and intricate, fingerstyle guitar arrangements, influenced by elements of blues, folk and rock. He has shared the stage with the likes of Franz Nicolay (Against Me!/The Hold Steady), Cory Branan and Austin Lucas, and in early 2016 he was announced as one of the final four nominees for the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award.
