51 Fleetgate. Fleetgate, DN18 5QA. This is the oldest residential house inNorth Lincolnshire dating possibly from 1325. Owned by North Lincolnshire Council and administered by CHAMP. Last occupied as Fred Clipson’s Barber’s Shop/Newsagent. Free admission on most Bank Holidays but check on Civic Society website. www.bartoncivicsociety.co.uk

Amy Howson, Humber Sloop (Humber Keel and Sloop Preservation Society). A lovingly restored 1914 sloop, typical of many that were the backbone ofHumber goods traffic. Usually moored at South Ferriby Sluice but sometimes at the mouth of Barton’s Haven. Trips available. www.keelsandsloops.org.uk .

Former stately residence housing a Council Chamber, Mayor’s Parlour, Baysgarth Cottage, Rural Craft Museum, Industrial Museum and Local Archives. Open Fri/Sat/Sun and Bank Holidays 1200 to 1600. 01652 660380 01652 660380. www.the-ropewalk.co.uk Based at the former and restored Hall’s Barton Ropery, there are fascinating exhibits illustrating former rope making and the lives of former workers. History books, gifts, café and adjacent car park.

St Mary’s Parish Church. Burgate, Barton-upon-Humber, DN18 5EZ. (see Churches). With roots in the 12C, originally All Saints, it was rededicated to the Blessed St Mary in 1248. Now the Parish Church, it has many fine architectural aspects including a Forster and Andrews organ. www.stmarysbarton.org.uk

Opening times may vary so please check the English Heritage website . A parish church, it was later made redundant from 1970. With a significant Saxon heritage, it is the oldest building in Barton-upon-Humber. Buried Lives exhibition.

English Heritage website. This restored enormous and ornate fortified gatehouse/barbican is part of the former Abbey and the grounds include old monastery buildings.

Wilderspin National School. Queen Street, Barton upon Humber, DN18 5QP. 01652 635172 01652 635172. www.wilderspinschool.org.uk A fully restored Victorian National School designed by educational pioneer Samuel Wilderspin (1791 to 1866), operated by the Queen Street School Preservation Trust, registered charity. Open March to November 1000 to 1600 and December to February 1100 to 1500. Coffee lounge, souvenir shop, tours and parties by arrangement.
