Notable persons associated in the past with Barton-upon-Humber include:-

Sir Isaac Pitman (1813-1897) Teacher and publisher, creator of Pitman shorthand and former teacher at the Charity School, Queen Street, Barton.

Samuel Wilderspin (1791-1866) Educationalist, founder of the Wilderspin National School, Queen Street, Barton upon Humber.

Rev’d Chad Varah (1911-2007) Clergyman, founder of the Samaritans and jointly the Eagle Comic, born at the Vicarage, Barton upon Humber, son of the Rector.

Percy Grainger (1882-1961) Musician, visitor to Barrow upon Humber and Barton upon Humber.

Philip Pape (lived and worked in Barton upon Humber 1960-1982). Sculptor, lecturer, singer and choirmaster, restorer of Tyrwhitt Hall, Beck Hill.
